WHAT IS A YOUNG CARER?

A young carer is a young person under the age of 18 who provides regular or ongoing care for a family member with a disability, long term illness, experiencing mental ill health or affected by substance misuse.

The care may take the form of physical or emotional support (Children and Families Act 2014). Young people taking on a caring role aged 16 to 24 are termed Young Adult Carers.

Young people

We can help you connect with other young carers, have fun experiences and get any support you might need. If you’re a Young Carer (8-15) or an Young Adult Carer (16-24) GYC is here for you.

Families

We know how important it is for a young carer to be supported at home.
We tailor our help to each young person’s situation and build on the strengths of the whole family.

Professionals

Are you a teacher, social worker, health professional, or work with young people and families in another role? We can help you identify young carers and make sure they get the support they need.
