Referring a Young Person to Gloucestershire Young Carers

With the agreement of the young person and their family, anyone can make a referral to Gloucestershire Young Carers. This may be the young person themselves, a family member, a family friend, or a professional involved with the family such as GPs, social workers, health workers, teachers, educational staff or community workers.

We ask that a separate referral form is completed for each young person in the family. Every young carer has their own experience of caring, and we assess each child or young person as an individual so we can understand their unique situation and offer support that is right for them.

Following triage, our first step is to offer a strengths‑ and needs‑based assessment. This helps us understand the level and impact of caring responsibilities. The outcome of this assessment guides the type of support we can offer. Because our service is tailored to individual needs, not all young carers will access the same support, and groups or activities are not automatically provided. Our role is to ensure each young person receives the most appropriate support for their circumstances.

With parental consent, we will liaise with schools and GPs to help ensure the young carer is supported in all areas of their life. Families will also receive our regular newsletter.

We are currently experiencing a high volume of referrals and have introduced a short waiting list. This may mean a delay in contacting families and completing assessments. If you would like to discuss a referral that has recently been made, please call us on 01452 733060.
