Education

What is the need?

At GYC, we know that when young carers are recognised, understood and supported within school & college it can make a vital difference to their lives.

Research shows that young carers face disadvantage in education in terms of attendance, attainment and social inclusion.

Achieve 9 GCSE grades lower on average than non-carers (The Children’s Society, 2022)

Higher persistent absence, linked to caring duties and mental health strain (Carers Trust, 2022)

More likely to face exclusion and disengagement due to stress and disrupted routines (Barnardo’s, 2021)

Often socially isolated or bullied, with limited access to peer support and extracurriculars (Young Carers Alliance, 2023; ONS, 2023)

Disadvantaged in higher education with only 16% progressing to university, compared to 38% of peers (Carers Trust, 2020)
