During the Easter break, the grounds of Cheltenham College were transformed into a hub of creativity, collaboration, and compassion. The college hosted an international school programme, welcoming students from Argentina, Italy, China, and Spain, who came not only to learn but to make a difference in the local community.
Over the two-week experience, the visiting students focused on two modules aimed at supporting and raising awareness of young carers, both within international communities and locally. Through lessons, creative activities, and discussions, they explored what it means to be a young carer.
Rather than stopping at awareness, the programme encouraged students to turn understanding into action. Divided into teams, they developed marketing campaigns, created products to sell at a stall, and produced video projects aimed at highlighting the challenges young carers face. The students brought diverse perspectives and skills, blending creativity with purpose as they crafted messages designed to inform and inspire.
One of the highlights of the programme was a vibrant market-stall event. From handmade goods to interactive displays, each stall reflected the teams’ efforts to engage the public and communicate their message. The event not only showcased their creativity but also served as a fundraising initiative, with proceeds going to Gloucestershire Young Carers. Students also interviewed some of Gloucestershire’s young carers and GYC staff, creating mini-documentaries and gaining insight into how caring responsibilities affect young people in the region.
The atmosphere on the day was energetic, with students confidently sharing what they had learned and sparking conversations with visitors. It was a clear demonstration of how education, when paired with real-world purpose, can create a lasting impact. At the end of the programme, Dusemond donated £3,000 to Gloucestershire Young Carers.
For the students, the experience went beyond improving their English language skills; it was also an opportunity to develop practical skills in teamwork, communication, and project management, all while contributing to a meaningful cause.
Dusemond’s Easter programme stands as a reminder of the power of global education to foster knowledge, empathy, and social responsibility.
