Young carers do all kinds of different things to help the person they care for

They can have extra responsibilities that other children of their age might not have. Things like:

Doing the shopping

Getting medication ready

Helping someone to get dressed

Preparing a meal or hot drink

Keeping an eye on younger children

Support for Young Carers

Young carers aged 8 to 15 may be helping with things like cooking, cleaning, emotional support, or just being a constant source of care at home.

16-24

Support for Young Adult Carers

Being a young adult carer comes with its own set of pressures such as balancing caring with education, work, relationships, and independence.

what does it mean to be a young carer?

The official definition is this: “children and young people who provide regular or ongoing care for a family member who is physically or mentally ill, disabled, or misuses substances.’ it simply means: A young carer is a child or young person who cares for a family member who needs extra support.

Many young carers give emotional support to the person they care for. This could be:

Talking to someone to calm them down

Reassuring them

Being there for them when they need it

What will happen after a referral?

An assessment worker will have visited you at your home or school to find out all about you, your family & your caring role. This is called an assessment.

A support plan will be sent to you

It looks at what you need
