Young Adult Carers become Youth Advisors

Two young adult carers from Gloucestershire have been selected as youth advisors for the All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) for young and young adult carers.

Following a detailed application process, Young adult carers, Luna and Zaynab, were selected by the Carers Trust to be Youth Advisors, supporting the APPG in their next inquiry looking at the barriers to higher education, employment and training opportunities for young adult carers.

The APPG for Young Carers and Young Adult Carers brings together Parliamentarians from across the political spectrum who are committed to improving the lives of young carers and young adult carers. The group’s mission is to provide a forum for key issues affecting young carers and young adult carers which will be addressed collaboratively by Parliamentarians and other key stakeholders, including young carers and young adult carers.

Luna and Zaynab will join 15 other young adult carers from across the country to help launch the inquiry on Thursday 12th June, chaired by Chris Vince, Labour and Co-operative MP for Harlow, and Allison Bennett, Liberal Democrat MP and Spokesperson for Carers and Care.

Their roles involve supporting the MP’s in designing questions to be asked in the enquiry, promoting involvement from other young adult carers, and reviewing evidence for the report.

The APPG will launch the final report in December in parliament where Luna and Zaynab will speak at the launch event with the other advisors and speak to the media regarding the findings.

Scott, Youth Participation Lead at Gloucestershire Young Carers said: “This is an incredible achievement for both of them and all of us here at GYC are very proud. They have both shown their commitment and passion to supporting other young carers within Gloucestershire and their participation in our forums and this is just reward for all their amazing work. The application process was detailed, and this year had the most applications they have ever received for the roles but they both clearly stood out with their determination and desire to support young carers across the country. We look forward to seeing the final report and the launch in Westminster later this year.”
