I’ve been volunteering with GYC for around 18 months now and I can honestly say I’ve enjoyed every minute of it. I retired four years ago and after some relaxation time and getting used to no alarm, I decided to look at volunteering opportunities in the local area, as a way of giving back and to use and share my skills and experience developed over the years. I live with my family in Twigworth, a stone’s throw from the GYC offices which has enabled me to help not only with our Cheltenham young carer group and on occasion with young carers from Cirencester, but also to provide some admin support to the team here in the village. I spend time as needed, doing filing and I’m a dab hand at sorting the welcome packs, which also allows me to get my daily steps in too!
Working with a fabulous team at the Cheltenham group headed up by Rebecca, has given me an insight into the many challenges faced by our young people who have carer responsibilities. The ‘down’ time they have just for themselves is so valuable and they enjoy the many activities organised for them. A chance to have fun, be with their friends and do something different. I have walked with alpacas, gone zip-wiring (at least, to catch them at the bottom!) We’ve spent time recently at a local farm where they were able to feed and hold some of the animals, plus an interesting walk with goats! At the centre, we have fun baking, doing crafts and sports. We’ve also had Halloween and Christmas events and BBQs.
The many benefits to me personally are huge. At 64 now, and with Fibromyalgia, I wasn’t sure whether I’d have the energy or stamina to do some of the above activities, but I’ve surprised myself. And it’s not just about physically being able to contribute. The young carers I’ve encountered don’t always want to talk or participate but by learning more about them in other ways and what they like or don’t like, I find it so rewarding when a quiet one suddenly strikes up a conversation or wanders into the kitchen to do some baking. It’s all about caring, having them have the trust in me to talk and importantly, to listen.
I have no hesitation in recommending volunteering with this organisation. Everyone I’ve spoken to has been so welcoming and I feel, once again part of a unique team. It’s opened my eyes to a whole new experience, and I love it.
