Gloucestershire Young Carers Forum members recentley took part in a consultation with Gloucestershire County Council and OFSTED. A quote from the report is as follows -

‘The quality of user engagement is adequate , with some strong features…………the involvement of young carers is good at national, regional and local levels.  An active young carers’ forum has addressed a number of issues including the possible implications for the future of the service, following the comprehensive spending review.  Young carers have been vocal nationally, they have met Members of Parliament locally and feel that they have significantly influenced the service they receive.’

The involvement of young people in the CAMHS retendering process was also mentioned which we were instrumental in facilitating.

Click here to be involved in the Young People Change Team campaign. The campaign is about helping Gloucestershire County Council to decide which changes to make to save £108m in response to the recent Comprehensive Spending Review. Cabinet and senior managers have listened to this feedback about priorities and are now in a position to make proposals for service change.

Owen Knight, a young carer from Tewkesbury, recently met with his local MP Laurence Robertson. Owen, a member of the Young Carers' Forum, put a range of young carers' issues to the MP. He told of his own story of being sole carer for his dad Richard who has fibromyalgia and ME and he talked about the challenges that he had faced when initially starting school at Tewkesbury School. Support from Gloucestershire Young Carers and the TLC centre at Tewkesbury School have enabled Owen to deal with his emotions linked to being a young carer more efficiently. Owen told the MP that there was a need for more support in schools to help other young people facing the same situation and issues as him.
