High Sheriff of Gloucestershire visits Cam and Dursley Group

There was much amusement and surprise when High Sheriff Tom Frost walked into Cam and Dursley Group last night. The young people there had certainly not seen an outfit like the one Tom was wearing. All in black velvet and ruffles he looked ‘more like a highwayman’ according to young carer Gareth. The young people quizzed Tom over his job and his outfit.

He explained that the role of High Sheriff was mainly ‘ceremonial’ but, once upon a time, had been the second highest role to the monarch. Now he works with judges and legal people to raise awareness of a range of issues in the community.

Tom asked the young people about their roles as young carers and admitted he had not been aware of young carers until he began his role in April this year.

Casey asked him if he would have chosen to go to a young carers’ group if he had had someone to look after when he was young and he quickly said ‘yes’.

She also asked him if he would come back to the group and again he replied ‘yes’. He told the young people that he had been honoured to meet them and admired the work they were doing to support their family members.
