For insurance brokers Cass Stephens 50 candles on a birthday cake just doesn’t have enough impact for celebrating their half decade anniversary so they have gone bigger and better by inviting employees and clients to take part in a fire walk.
The fire walk fundraiser was the bright idea of Matt Cass one of the latest generations of the family to work for this long-standing family business based on Spa Road, Gloucester.
Previous fundraisers held by the company have included participation in the Gloucester Marathon, a 100 mile walk and skydiving. This time, however, Matt and his colleagues were determined to really step out of their comfort zone. This week a team literally walked over hot coals to raise funds the two local young people’s charities: Young Gloucestershire and Gloucestershire Young Carers.
Matt, says: “We raised funds earlier in the year for Young Gloucestershire through some of our colleagues running in the Gloucester Marathon. I knew of the work of Young Gloucestershire through a friend and we were all impressed by the support they offer to young people in helping to get ahead in education, training and employment.
“I was then at a presentation about the work of Gloucestershire Young Carers and was astounded to hear about the challenges so many young people in the county face in caring for members of their family.
“I suggested both charities be linked to our 50th anniversary celebrations and we’ve been holding events all year to raise funds. We’ve done the odd unusual fundraiser over the years and while other companies might put on a comedian and a dinner to celebrate their anniversary, we decided to organise a fire-themed evening inviting colleagues and clients to do brave a fire walk.”
Matt is proud of his family’s achievement in reaching 50 years and says the secret to the company’s success lies in the respect each family member has for the area of business each specialises in as well as the respected hierarchy of the company.
Matt says: “My brother James is the Managing Director and I’m involved in the specialist area of work which involves insurance for mobile homes and caravans. We all have our own areas of expertise. The company has grown stronger over the years from a small business to now one that employs 25 people.”
Young Gloucestershire Fundraising Manager Karl Gwilliam says: “I’ve known the Cass family for many years and have always admired the fact that their business has always supported local charities. YG is really grateful of their support this year through their Gloucester Marathon team and through Matt’s fire-walk and wish their business a very happy anniversary.”
Gloucestershire Young Carers Operations Manager Ele Semadeni says: “It is brave of the team at Cass Stephens to face a fire walk challenge in aid of us but we are grateful that they have considered our charity to support. We hope they enjoy their celebrations.”
