Congratulations to Amie, winner of the Stonehouse Young Person of the Year Award!
Amie has been awarded the title by Stonehouse Town Council at the Stonehouse Civic Awards ceremony 2018 and was nominated by Mrs Wilson, Headteacher at Maidenhill School, for her continuous charity work.
Amie is a young carer for her brother who has been assessed as on the autistic spectrum. She’s been supported by Gloucestershire Young Carers since July 2016 and in December that year joined the ‘Our Voice’ forum. Amie is an amazing advocate for young carers and has endless enthusiasm for raising awareness! Since December 2016 her work with the forum has included: co-delivering a workshop at our annual conference, presenting to Gloucestershire County Council, going on Gloucester FM and even supporting fundraising through bag packing at Waitrose in Stroud. In addition to this, Amie has also organised a collection of hats, scarves and gloves for the Salvation Army to be distributed to local homeless people.
Amie is also a member of Gloucestershire County Youth Choir and will be doing her Grade 5 music exam later in the summer. Oh – and she balances a Saturday job alongside all of this!
Amie said: “During the awards ceremony, they summarised my achievements and the son of Vicky Wakefield Heath presented me with the cup. I was also awarded the certificate by Theresa Watt, the Mayor of Stonehouse. Being a part of the GYC forum allows me to open up about my feelings and help other young adult carers feel safe and supported. I’ve also made some amazing friends. I feel very proud of myself as I didn’t realise how much my hard work is appreciated in my local area. I’m also glad to make my parents proud”.
Thank you to Stonehouse Town Council for shining a light on Amie’s contributions to the local community.
The Young Person of the Year Award is in memory of Vicky Wakefield Heath, a Stonehouse mum who died very young but who was well-known for her work with churches and Christian groups and who was a former winner of the Stonehouse Young Person of the Year award.
